I know that this is a very much discussed topic lately and I know that I will not tell you new things or new big discoveries about fast food, but the idea that made me write this article is that although we all know that fast food does not do us any good, and that it hurts our health, we continue to be big fast-food consumers and even to give our children fast food products. Why?
In order to answer this question, we need to look at the benefits of this type of food (it must have many advantages since it is the product of a successful business) and then look at the disadvantages and negative effects on our health on the long-term.
Advantages of fast food
If we think of advantages, we should first make the portrait of the target buyer. They are, mainly, people who do not have time to prepare food, who have a loaded schedule and appreciate that on their way, among many meetings, they can take something to eat in just a few minutes and, more than that, they do not waste time eating in the restaurants because this type of food can easily be consumed in the car, in the subway, or while doing other activities.
In conclusion, these fast food meals have the big advantage of not being time-consuming. That’s really a great advantage in this world of speed, but if we stop for a short time and think about the global aspect of the problem, then maybe the things will look different.
Besides this great advantage of time-saving, fast-food products also have other advantages, smaller, to be correct, but often very enjoyable:
- It’s cheaper – often a fast-food menu costs less than a regular meal, not to mention in comparison to an organic meal.
- We also do not have to worry about preparing a meal – we can see how our daily schedule frees itself by saving the food preparation time, but this comes at the expense of our later health.
- Irresistible smell and pleasant taste – many times, even if we do not necessarily want a fast-food meal, the irresistible smell, taste, and the impeccable image of the fast food products make us choose them. Also, the advertising and the commercials they make make us curious and we start want to try them.
Disadvantages of fast food
So much about the benefits, let us now talk about their many shortcomings on our lives (health, social life, family life) in the short and long term.
The first disadvantage, often visible and impressive, is the obesity. These products contain enormous calories. A classic fast-food menu (hamburger, french fries, plus a carbonated drink) makes you use all the calories you need for one day at a single meal (caloric burst) and does not provide the food you need.
