Frankincense oil is a resin from several tree species belonging to the Boswellia carteri genus. Its name seems to be a derived of the French term “franc encens”, meaning quality incense. The Arabic name for frankincense oil is “olibanum”, a derived of “al Luban”, meaning milk.
When an incision is made into the bark, the tree secretes a milky sap that gathers and hardens in the incision into small resin nuggets with a golden tint. The nuggets are collected and used for oil extraction.
Evidence suggests frankincense oil has been used for centuries, ever since ancient Egypt, both in religious rituals and as a natural remedy with powerful anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and rejuvenating properties.
Use of Frankincense Oil
In the beginning, frankincense resin was mostly used for religious services. The priests burned it as incense instilling the idea that its invisible scent would please God, chase away evil spirits, and set spirits free.
Frankincense does have an incredible aroma, even more intense in the essential oil. It is so unique and sweet that it has turned the oil into the most popular ingredient in aromatherapy blends. In religious rituals, it has been a prerequisite from ancient times to date.
Used by Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, Chinese, Indians, and Anglo-Saxons, it followed the Silk Road and saw its value exceed that of gold, being highly treasured for its unique properties to this day. However, it is important to note that the oil’s properties depend on the tree species it is extracted from.
