What are vitamins?
Vitamins are organic substances needed by the body in moderate amounts for its optimal functioning. Since few of them are synthesized in the body, there’s needed a continuous intake of natural products to meet those needs. An imbalanced daily nutrition and low in nutrients contribute to increased stress and the occurrence of deficiencies in health. Vitamins are distinguished by the role they have in the body. Besides, low vitamin levels may be linked to migraines in kids.
Among the most important are vitamins A, C, D, and E because they have antioxidant properties and help to neutralize harmful free radicals, while Vitamin D helps the organism to retain the necessary amounts of Calcium, among other benefits it’s offering.
Important things about vitamins
Excess of vitamins has been proved to be a problem as big as their deficit is. For example, the presence in large amounts of vitamins C and E promotes oxidation in the body, being harmful. In insufficient quantities, same vitamins are responsible for various heart diseases.
Deficiency of vitamin B12 and folic acid was associated with high levels of homocysteine in the blood and an increased risk of stroke and heart failure. But so far, no evidence that supplementation with these vitamins may reduce the risk of heart disease.
Vitamins A and D are very important for younger ones because they are ones of the essential components in the growth process.
Vitamin D helps normal bone development and maintaining the balance between the bone and the Calcium in the blood. Vitamin D increases the efficiency of the immune system.
However, not incidentally we hear most in the media about the Vitamin C. Its qualities are the most diverse and amazing. Vitamin C has anti-infectious qualities, toning, anti-allergic, anti-toxic, and is also known as the most powerful antioxidant.
This vitamin increases the resistance of blood vessels, lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases, regulating the sugar in blood level, and cholesterol in the body.
Vitamin C also intervenes in the proper functioning of tissues and organs. Thus, it has proven effective in reducing the rate of clouding of the lens (especially in the elderly) and the delay of cataracts.
A diet based on natural sources of vitamins can offer protection against diseases, saving you from suffering and expensive treatments.
Low Vitamin Levels May Be Linked with Migraines in Kids.
The duration of migraines can last from a few hours to three days. There are many factors that can cause these headaches, such as the environment, genetics, or neurological factors.
Migraines are different in intensity and come bundled with several symptoms. Some symptoms that occur with migraines are chills, sweating, vomiting, dizziness, and sensitivity to light.
Studies have shown that more than 300 million people suffer from migraines, and women and children are more prone to this condition.
Causes of migraines.
Although the appearance of these headaches is not fully explained, many studies reported that these are the main reasons for the occurrence of migraines:
- brain vasoconstriction – migraines can be caused by a decrease in blood circulation and compression of blood vessels, followed by stretching and dilation of blood vessels, thereby activating neurons that cause pain
- changes in serotonin level – many studies have shown that inflammation and swelling of blood vessels, even in the brain can cause headaches, and may be related to changes in the serotonin level.
- a neurological disorder related to the activity of nerve cells
- the excessive increase of blood flow to the brain – headaches do not occur as a result of decreased blood flow, but due to its increasing.
Deficiency of vitamins and migraines.
One study found that migraines can be reduced by intake of vitamin B6, B12, and folic acid supplements during a period of 6 months. The European Journal of Neurology conducted a study in 2004 which showed the same results, concluding that consumption of high doses of riboflavin may prevent migraine attacks.
Elevated levels of homocysteine can cause a dysfunction or a certain genetic mutation, which causes people to be prone to migraines. Vitamins B6 and B12 supplements can reduce homocysteine.
When it comes to kids, specialists explain that the genetic profile is of great importance to the optimal dose of vitamin B. However, other types of deficiency can also cause migraine attacks in kids. One study found that 42% of the kids patients who suffer from migraines had a deficiency of vitamin D.
Keeping in mind that some studies concluded that low vitamins levels may be linked to migraines in kids, you should take action now and give to your kid only healthy foods, especially raw fruits and vegetables. Of course, a dietary supplements base on vitamins should work, too.
