The pregnancy news brings along a huge amount of emotions and not all of them are positive. A woman is exposed to so many feelings and worries during those nine months. Even if she is excited that she will bring a new life into her own, the stress is at very high levels. Everyone is having expectations from her such as to change her life in an instant.

Quitting smoking is a must but it is also the most difficult thing a nicotine addict can go through. Beside this source of stress, a pregnant woman is exposed to many other sources of stress. She must go to regular and quite frequent medical checkups. During those checkups and investigations, she is facing all those medical devices and all those pains. Every stage of the pregnancy comes along with allot of discomfort. She cannot sleep, she has various aches, nausea, eating disorders etc.

Above all these things she must go through the stress stages the lack of nicotine will bring. The panic feeling, the anxiety feeling along with the decrease ability to concentrate on other things, are pretty difficult to bear.

The constant advices, that she must be a good mom, who cares more about her unborn child, are another source of stress. If she feels that she fails in quitting this habit, she knows that all the people around her will judge her. It is as everyone forgot how difficult is to save yourself from an addiction. She will start feeling guilty in front of all her friends and she will feel guilty in front of her unborn child as well. It is easy to become depressed when no one seems to understand you.

Even if you may say that you don’t care about what other people think, you know that you do care about that. We are social people, who live in a society who loves to judge other people so they can forget about its own flaws.

What can you do about that?

My personal advice is to quit finding excuses. Most smokers say that they cannot quit because they are too stressed. They need to light up a cigarette so they can calm down. This is their addiction speaking. A cigarette does not calm you down. Similar excuses you can hear from pregnant women as well. They try to find a reason to go on with their nasty habit. In the following rows, I will demolish any theory that a pregnant woman may want to agree with, related to this topic.

They say that many moms smoked during their pregnancies and they have healthy babies after all. Do you really want to expose yourself to this risk? Everything you eat, everything you drink or smoke you give to your baby as well. Have you heard about state of withdrawal at a newborn? You don’t want your baby to go through that experience in his first days into this world. Beside this situation, the most common problem is that your baby will come sooner than he should. This means that his development will not be complete. He may have lungs disorders that will prevent him from breathing properly.

Other moms will say that even if their children will be smaller at their birth, because they never quit smoking during their pregnancy, this is not a real problem. In fact, they believe that the birth process will be much easier to bear. Are you ready to face his poor immunity system? Are you ready to see your newborn helpless on a hospital bed because he is too small and fragile and you cannot take him home with you because of that? This is what a too small newborn really means.

A pregnant woman that smokes forces her baby to smoke as well. Because of those noxious substances, he will not be able to get all the nutrients he needs to develop and to feed himself.

Other women may believe that if they quit smoking during pregnancy they will gain too much weight. There is nothing true about this affirmation. If you maintain a healthy diet, that excludes fast food products and too many sweets, you will maintain a good figure, for a pregnant lady, and your baby will get exactly what he needs in this stage of his life.

Some women, thinks that it is better to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked per day, than to quit for good. This is better than nothing, but it may not count for your baby’ health.

How to stop smoking?

After all the things from above that may scare you a bit, you want from me to tell you how you can do it. The good thing is that you already have the strongest motivation possible. Your baby is the most important in this moment and this is your first proof that you are going to be a good mom for him.

First, you should pick a day. You should not wait for that day when you will not be so stressed, because you may never find it. Once you have set a date, you must stick with it.

A day before the established date, you should eliminate from your surroundings everything that may tempt you to light up a cigarette such as ashtrays, cigarettes, lighters and even coffee.

You should announce every close friend and most all the people from your entourage that you will not smoke anymore, so you can obtain from them the needed support.

You must be the best moral support for yourself. You must be so determined that no temptation will make you fail from the road that you started. The line ”Just one cigarette will not harm anyone” must not exist.

Keep around you something to crunch, when you feel the need of a smoke, take a carrot stick instead. You can also start to meditate. Meditation includes many breathing exercises that will help you allot.

A good idea is to stop frequenting the places where you used to smoke all the time such as restaurants, bars, places where you used to drink your morning coffee etc.

You should give yourself some gifts. Each week without cigarettes should be rewarded. It is one of the biggest accomplishments that you achieved. So, with the money saved you can buy for yourself, makeup products, clothes, or other things that will satisfy you.

If you fail the first time, you should not give up. You know now which your weak points are. This is a trump for your next battle. You will know exactly what you did wrong the first time, so you will not repeat it again.

To quit smoking may be the most difficult task that you have to accomplish. This does not mean that it is impossible. You cannot find a better motivation than a pregnancy. You will find the power to achieve this goal. You should not turn back to your old habits. Once you achieved this difficult task, you should forget about it completely. You do not want your baby to be exposed to cigarette smoke because you know that it is just as bad for his health as it is for yours.
