What are the signs and symptoms of an alcohol addiction? How do you learn to recognize whether you’re drinking is moderated or it is over the edge? You’re about to find out, so stay tuned! You’re about to find out, so stay tuned!

So, the first thing you should know about the alcohol dependency is that you don’t have to drink in an extreme manner to develop the habit of drinking, it is sufficient to have a regular drinking schedule, even if it is in small amounts. In time, they will add up to the final results, which can lead up in two big directions – either you are that kind of drinker that cannot imagine the weekend passing without him having a drink, or the one for whom drinking is the most important thing in the world, even more important than his job, his family, his friends and relationships. There is a fact that if people drink heavily, they begin to tolerate the alcohol more and more, and this is rather a psychological effect: the more you consume something, you’ll end up wanting to consume it more and more in order to obtain the same feelings or effects. The frequent consumption of the alcohol leads to major changes in the wiring of the brain, which will only make your ability to drink out of control even bigger.

The reason for why you are an alcohol dependent may just as well be because it runs in the family. As horrible as it may sound, you may be prone to alcohol dependency because it is mostly in your veins and genes, literally. The environment and the family’s attitude towards drinking alcohol is also a factor that could favor your drinking dependency.

If you want to learn how to notice and recognize the signs of alcohol dependence, you should know that the symptoms can flow in both ways, physically and psychologically. For example, you may:

  • Worry too much about where you will get your next drink, so you’ll probably start to make plans around events and occasions where alcohol is needed
  • Find it hard to stop drinking and you will begin to wonder or realize that you have a compulsive desire and need to drink, more and more
  • Feel you have to drink right when you wake up in the morning. Or you may go to sleep with the thought of you need a drink to sleep better
  • Experience feelings of anxiety, suicidal feelings or alcohol related depression. The drinking process will then interfere with the neurotransmitters in the brain which usually support a good mental health
  • Be suffering from some physical withdrawal symptoms, for example shaking, nausea, sweating. These strange symptoms will stop the minute you will drink

By this time now, you will start wondering how to get the help you need in order to quit drinking. While the majority of people turn to wanting to control their extreme drinking by using medical treatments or following a therapeutic program, only a few of them try to give it up completely by abstaining to drink every single day. A study developed in Sweden agrees that the only and best way for people to quit drinking for good is the abstinence!

So, instead of spending time, money and energy on useless and unnecessary programs and treatments with pills, why not start with the will to abstain and let go of the unhealthy habit of drinking? It appears that the participants in the study that chose to abstain themselves from drinking were able to prove that they had nearly twice as much chances to be successful rather than people that sought any other kind of help, and this only after 2 and a half years after they’ve started to apply this method.

There were 201 participants in the study that were separated in two major groups: the ones that preferred abstinence, and the ones that preferred low-risk drinking methods. After 2 years and a half, there was a 90% percent rate of success for the people that chose to abstain from drinking compared to the other side of the participants. The abstinent participants were able to fully stop drinking. Regarding the programs that were only aiming at controlling the drinking, there were only 50% of people that managed to successfully limit their alcohol intake. On short words, the results were that people who set their goal to abstain completely and totally from drinking were more successful than the ones who only chose to control their drinking measures.

From a psychological point of view, when people who drink put their minds to work and decide or set the objective to abstain from drinking, the goal is clear for them: they will not touch or put a single drop of drink in their mouths on the entire period of time they set for themselves. On the other hand, people that want to just adjust and control their drinking habits, will have to face multiple and confusing decisions instead, such as how much to drink from now on, when to drink from now on and what to drink from now on.

From all of these, it appears that the most important factor that contributes to the success of the people that manage to quit drinking is the personal will of each person. When someone is truly focused and believes in its goal to quit drinking, this will be enough for them to get the wanted results, especially if they are properly motivated to quit drinking. Abstinence is the key when you make it your personal goal, so if the drinking gets you into troubles, then this is the right answer that will help get rid of your problem once and for all. The thing is, you have to be really sure of what is your long-term goal in your alcohol use disorder – do you want to quit, or do you want to control your drinking habits? If you want to quit, then you should be looking only for programs that encourage and helps you develop and maintain a treatment that advocates for the complete abstinence. Do not think beforehand that it will be a hard road to walk on, because at the end of it, you will be free of any bad an unhealthy habit that affects your life. So, do you want to quit drinking? Well, abstinence works best!
