Causes and treatments

Having bright white teeth it’s a matter of both beauty and health. Tooth enamel can be uniformly yellow or some pale stains only appear on certain parts of the tooth, which can be in different shades of yellow, brown and gray. Finding out the causes for yellow teeth will give us the right answers on why do teeth turn yellow.

Causes

Yellow teeth can have multiple causes. This may be intrinsic (from inside the tooth) or extrinsic causes (external factors).

Let’s see why do teeth turn yellow.

Aging

Often, the teeth turn yellow while we age. Even if a person is using a good toothbrush and floss, great toothpaste, and brushes his teeth frequently, over the years some yellow stains can infiltrate in the white protective layer of the teeth and enamel. Toothpaste can not penetrate so deep, and although teeth are still strong and healthy, the smile will not be the brightest.

Foods and drinks

Teeth stains may occur due to beverages and food that we consume. Most negative in effects are alcoholic beverages, tobacco, coffee, carrots, tea, and berries because these products contain pigmentation agents.

The tooth may be affected from the inside.

If someone has a tooth whose color is darker than usual, perhaps the tooth is damaged, as its nerve has been affected. In this case, it may be needed a more complex intervention on the tooth than a regular teeth whitening procedure.

Although bleaching can have a temporary effect, a tooth that has a different color from the others should be treated by a dentist.

Inappropriate treatment on childhood teeth.

Before the age of eight, children’s tooth enamel is still forming and therefore it is vulnerable to substances that might turn teeth yellow and that may persist in adulthood, too.

If children are receiving large amounts of tetracycline (antibiotic), their teeth may present splashes of color ranging from yellow-brown to gray-blue.

Secondly, children who swallow more fluoride (e.g. from toothpaste), can form a teeth disease called fluorosis that causes whitish spots or lines on the teeth.

Inappropriate teeth hygiene.

Not brushing your teeth at least twice a day could lead to dental plaque, which is at first a sticky colorless deposit on the teeth but eventually will form tartar becoming pale yellow or even brown.

Plaque is not only an appearance issue, but it is an environment for bacteria development and could lead to cavities, decays, gingivitis, or periodontitis.

Different methods for teeth whitening

 Professional teeth whitening.

Dental whitening done at the dentist’s office involves several visits where professional care will be given for teeth whitening to be properly done.

This procedure takes about 5-7 weeks to be done and its effects last for around three years.

Teeth whitening gel.

Applying a special gel for whitening teeth is a very price convenient method and it can be easily done at home. Best teeth whitening gels are those that contain peroxide.

This gel must be applied for 2-3 weeks and its effects last for 1-3 years.

The application of dental crowns

This quite expensive dental procedure can change the appearance of the teeth that are broken or damaged by cavities.

It can take 3-4 weeks to be done, but its effects last for 10-15 years.

Porcelain dental veneers

The porcelain veneers cover the front of the teeth in order to improve their appearance using a procedure less aggressive and less expensive than a dental crown.

It is done in 3-4 weeks and lasts for 10-15 years.

Dental Bonding

This is the technique used by the dentist doctor for slight reshapes and whitening. It is useful for minor interventions.

This procedure is done in 1-2 weeks and its effects last for 5-10 years.

Special teeth whitening toothpaste

A common technique to achieve a slight whitening, momentary. Using a special toothpaste to fight plaque and tartar deposit is useful and it can keep you safe from all the negative effects of plaque and tartar.

Teeth whitening strips

These strips do not contain any liquid substance, they are affordable and easy to use.

For the best effects, this procedure should be repeated for 1-2 weeks and its effects last for 1 year.

Remember:

– no form of teeth whitening can’t correct any discoloration

– if a person has yellow spots on teeth it is a suitable candidate for teeth whitening

– if someone has a gray tooth, the results will be less positive

– dental whitening doesn’t work if the teeth have crowns or veneers, but in these particular cases, the best thing to do it replace the affected crowns or veneer

– if someone has white spots on teeth, tooth cavities, or gums infections, then no teeth whitening procedure will be effective without firstly treating the teeth or gums

An easy and natural do it at home teeth whitening method

Teeth whitening can be quite costly, but there is a way to get incredible results applying a solution that you can make at home.

Whiten your teeth in just 3 minutes without requiring a visit to the dentist. This method is very cheap and easy to get it done.

So, the 3 minutes teeth whitening method recipe is done by mixing two ingredients that can be found anywhere:

  • one lemon
  • one teaspoon of baking soda

Put the baking soda into a bowl and rub with a spoon. Then, squeeze the lemon juice over the baking soda and leave it until the resulted chemical reaction has finished, and right after that mix well the entire solution.

The solution can be applied to the teeth with a clean piece of cotton wool and should be left on the teeth for about 30 minutes.

Then it is enough to brush your teeth with toothpaste and the result will be amazing after few days of usage.

Now, that we’ve found out the causes and successfully answered to why do the teeth turn yellow, hopefully, some of you will prevent teeth yellowing, while others that are already affected will apply one of the methods presented here.

No matter what, don’t forget: ‘Keep smiling!‘
